For their second full-length release, Lanterner will work again with longtime Montréal label, ORAL Records. This time the release is co-produced between ORAL and Steve?s newly minted, small-scale project, The Dim Coast.

Lanterner returns with more songs balancing between improvisation and iterations of reoccurring themes. Noise, rock , drone and melodic spaciousness glide from track to track. The spirit of punk rock lurks in the background. This release features three guests on three tracks: Sophie Trudeau lays down textured violin drones on Eux, Tokyo?s master of no-input mixing board, Toshimaru Nakamura smears his trademark hi and low pitched tones and textures across the title track, and Burkhard Stangl, Vienna?s gentleman of the guitar adds his melancholic chording throughout Police bourgeoise aux dents.

ET\OU arose from the convergence of two giants of current Canadian music: Martin Tétreault, a dazzling turntablist of international renown; and Michel Langevin, the famed drummer of the legendary progressive metal band, VOIVOD.

For this promising duo’s first LP and CD, ORAL and MINUTE have teamed up to introduce this unique partnership to all lovers of thundering sounds and electrifying performances. The intensity of their studio compositions and wide-open dialogues are unique and unmatched.

Michel Langevin is a drummer who made his mark in both heavy metal (over 25 years with the Jonquière band VOIVOD) and alternative music (numerous collaborations); the sheer physicality of his performances has left no listener indifferent. Martin Tétreault, known worldwide for his use of turntables, diverse surfaces and stringed instruments, is an experienced improviser with countless collaborations to his credit.

This “super group” has been in the making for several years. The pair’s first encounter dates back to April 12, 2007, at the 100% Batterie! event based on Martin Tétreault’s concept of playing exclusively drum solos on vinyl, and bringing together nine drummers in the same hall (Michel Langevin among them). Since then, the duo has performed on several occasions in Quebec, each highly memorable.

The two musicians have developed a sound that combines their respective practices, with a heavy accent on rhythm, percussion and tangled masses of sound that emerge from their vibrant exchanges. Sharing a clear musical affinity, each is open to the world of the other in a collaborative dynamic.

Martin Tétreault is here powerfully and abrasively percussive, while Michel Langevin approaches the drums as a complete instrument, a source of rhythmic variations and unusual textures. The range of possibilities thus expands for each instrumentalist. From this collision of musical genres and cross-pollination of practices, new approaches emerge, new avenues of diversity and creativity.

This project begins with a daydream. What would the island of Montreal sound like if it were a vinyl record? If you could somehow place the island on an immense turntable, what textures would be revealed in its surface?

Answering these questions began with the development of an all-terrain stylus that could transduce the textural changes of the ground plane into physical sounds.

The dream of the sound of impossible surfaces is not new. In an essay from 1919, Rainer Maria Rilke wondered what sounds the skull might reveal if only it could be traced by a stylus. A few years later, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy while contemplating new potentials for the phonograph, exclaimed 'I wonder how your nose will sound? '

This record continues in this spirit of imagined sounds etched into the polished surface of the record. Attempting to make the impossible tangible, yet never achieving a convincing verisimilitude. Instead, it is hoped that the sounds released here will continue to provoke further sonic daydreaming.

ON A PROPOSAL BY ERIC MATTSON.
I CREATED THIS AUDIO-PICTURE DISC INSPIRED BY MY PROJECT DUST.
I DELIBERATELY DEPOSITED ON A OLD VINYL A PILE OF DUST,AND THEN THE NEEDLE LIKE A DIRT TRAILER AND POWERED THE ENGINE.

I RECORDED THE SOUND OF THIS MICROCOSM OF FRICTION AND COLLECTED A SERIES OF IMAGES WITH A MACRO LENS.

DUST
INSPIRED BY 1920 MARCEL DUCHAMP + MAN RAY'S PHOTOGRAPH " ÉLEVAGE DE POUSSIÈRE ", DUST EXPLORES CHANGES IN THE STATE OF MATTER. AT THE EDGE OF THE IMPERCEPTIBLE, PIGMENTS ARE SUSPENDED AROUND A MAGNETIC FIELD. RANDOM FIBROUS NETWORKS TAKE SHAPE AND THEN FORM COMPOSITE OBJECTS, HYPNOTIC IN THEIR COMPLEXITY. SOUND PARTICLES PAIRED WITH LUMINOUS AGGREGATES EXIST ON A SCALE THAT CANCELS OUT ALL POINTS OF REFERENCE.

THUS, AT THE TURNING POINT BETWEEN THE INVISIBLE AND THE VISIBLE, DUST BECOMES INTOXICATING AND THE VIDEO SURFACE A VERITABLE ACCUMULATION OF X-RAYS.

Version 180g vinyl of the CD

Urban poetry and industrial atmosphere. Avant (Before): somewhere in the 70s, a first contact with "L' Autchose" by the poet Lucien Francoeur acts on Hugo Girard ( Vromb) as a Close Encounter of the First Kind. The UFO of the Montreal freak leaves deep traces in the mind of the kid which perceives in the poetry of the rocker-mutant only the immediate levels of poetic associations. The hotel of vampires, St - Guillaume's sputniks, Nightmare of Dracula and especially, A Stereo in my Brain, inhabit the imagination of Vromb since that early time. Ailleurs (Somewhere else): texts recited or sung by Lucien Francoeur in 2011 are visited, contamined, by Vromb's sound universe. The prayers of the urban rocker are conveyed by a musical humming out of all musical conventions and ephemeral tendencies.

Clever noises and electronic waves of drones, associate with rhythms, dark climates and acoustic variations. The exquisite noise guitarist, Michel Meunier, marks his presence on this Close Encounter of the Third Kind.

For music lovers of : Aut'Chose, Lucien Francoeur, Vromb, Pan Sonic, Roger Rotor, the poets.

Work presented at these exhibitions: Icarus, Axe-Néo-7, Gatineau, January 2011 - Triennale québécoise, autumn 2011, Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. "The myth of Icarus is an embodiment of the spirit's measureless ambition, of the intellect gone mad and of a hunger for power. Thinking of the civilizations that venerated the sun, we can only note their fall. I do not think our contemporary world will escape this: the sun literally burning away our skins, drying the earth and disrupting the magnetic fields. As in myth, the current forms of Power lays bare the irrationality and hunger they carry within. From this thought, and this point of view, from the moment in the myth in which Icarus hovers in mid-air, in which he desires, in which he aspires to his freedom and his death, I draw an allegory of the fall of Capitalism's empire."

Despite being hailed as essential and highly influential, Konrad Becker's mythical Monoton project has spent a surprisingly long time off the radar. Originating in Austria in 1979, Monoton's sound has evolved from abstract electronica, through rave to laptop jams by absorbing new technology like an amorphous blob and spitting out new ideas relentlessly, often well before their accepted time. Although no new music was released for the better part of two decades, Becker has never left the scene and has instead concentrated on building up widely regarded multimedia art, social and information projects. Thanks to Montreal's Oral label, however, the old works are quietly slipping back onto the market again, shortchanging all the collectors paying exorbitant sums on eBay.

Bridging the gap between krautrock, Raster-Noton and Kompakt, the four tracks here are far from mere money spinners with only "Mutation Waltz" having been previously released on an obscure Dutch compilation. On that track phasing patterns and voices weave in and out of key and synchronisation, sounding more mathematical than the opener " 3.141592653589793" which is allegedly based on a transposition of the number into musical notation. Its repetitive, analogue drive is highly danceable, although maybe not the best for peak time.

"Transnumerique" is somewhere in between the two, being both motoric and disorientating—like a Teutonic version of Suicide. "Ich Weiss Nichts," which originally appeared in two different forms on an early 7-inch, is more dizzying. This unearthed mix fuses Space Invader effects with buried Roxy Music atmospheres and broken beat noises that sound simultaneously dated and yet incredibly visionary. With this release, another 10-inch already available and further re-releases slated for later in the year, Monoton could finally be back on the radar.
